Niche, a publication that ranks school districts on a multitude of subjects, released their 2017 Best High School for Athletics in Metro Detroit rankings, and Rochester Athletics came in at #34. This is up twenty-four places from the previous year. The Niche rankings are based on student and parent reviews of athletics, student participation in athletics, and the number of sports offered at the school.
The previous year, Rochester brought home two state championships in girls golf and competitive cheer. The girls golf team not only won the state championship, but also won conference and regional titles as well (set a new regional low score record). The competitive cheer team also won conference, district, and regional titles on the way to their 19th overall state championship. The boys soccer program also won district and regional crowns on the way to a state semi-final appearance, while baseball won conference, district and regional titles as they made their second appearance in a row in the state quarter finals.Volleyball went undefeated in conference play, winning the OAA title for the first time in nearly a decade. Not to be outdone was the softball program, who also completed an undefeated conference slate, winning their second OAA title in three years.
Jeff Haney was named the Division 1 Girls Golf State Coach of the Year, while Athletic Director Luke Beach was named the Varsity Brand National Outstanding Athletic Director of the Year.
