Every month Rochester Athletics highlights one of our tremendous coaches, this month’s coach is Hal Commerson. Coach Commerson has coached at RHS over 40 years, and was a Rochester Athletics Hall of Fame inductee in 2008. Commerson has held several coaching positions at Rochester High School, including cross country, track, boys and girls basketball, and golf. He helped lead the 1978 cross country team to Rochester’s first ever state title, and also coached the girls golf team to a state championship in 2002. Coach Commerson is currently the girls freshmen basketball coach at Rochester. Coach Commerson not only gets the most out of his student-athletes, but he also makes an enormous impact in their lives.
“Coach Commerson knows how to build and sustain a successful program, but most of all he is invested in seeing that his student-athletes are the best person they can be first”, replied Rochester Athletic Director Luke Beach. “Make no mistake about it, if you play for Hal, you’re going to get coached hard, but it is all to make you a better player and a successful person beyond the court”, added Beach.
Coach Jeff Haney said “Coach Commerson is such a valuable asset to RHS. From the countless player’s lives that he’s touched to the coaches who have learned from him and been mentored by him, I am extremely thankful for him and all he’s done to make our school what it is today”.
Track coach Larry Adams, who was just recently inducted into the Rochester Athletics Hall of Fame added, “I was lucky of enough to be hired by Coach Commerson. As a young coach, he taught me the right way to interact and impact our athletes. I can attribute my success as a coach at RHS to those early years where Hal helped show me the way. His commitment to the athletes and coaches of RHS and their development is unparalleled. I could not have asked for a better mentor”.
